Medieval Spanish and Portuguese name of Germanic origin, from irmin (referring to the Irminones and the god Irmin, in the sense "great, universal") combined with -sind "path, journey, military expedition"; the second element is sometimes linked instead to -swinth "strong". It was borne by several Iberian queens and countesses.
