“Possibly 'rejoice'”

An earlier variant of Gaius, an ancient Roman praenomen of uncertain etymology; possibly from Latin 'gaudeo' meaning 'to rejoice', though it may alternatively be of unknown Etruscan origin. Borne by Gaius Julius Caesar and his adopted son, the later Emperor Augustus; the Gaius spelling also appears in the New Testament, belonging to a bishop of Ephesus regarded as a saint.
