Ara

/AH · rah/

“Possibly adoring, unisex”

Origin disputed. In Armenian legend, the meaning is unknown, possibly of Sumerian origin; Ara was a king so handsome that the Assyrian queen Semiramis went to war to capture him, and he was killed in the fighting. In a separate Arabic and Hebrew tradition, Ara is said to mean 'worshipping' or 'adoring'. Usage today is genuinely unisex: the Bible records it as a man's name, but in England, Poland and Sweden it is currently given more often to girls than to boys.
