Bethia

/BEE · thee · uh/

“Possibly daughter of God, or life”

A name with more than one documented origin. In some editions of the Bible, including the Douay-Rheims translation, Bethia is a form of Bithiah, a Hebrew name that possibly means 'daughter of God.' Separately, it was used in Scotland from the 1600s as an anglicized form of the Gaelic name Beathag, itself the feminine form of Beathan and linked to the word for 'life.' It has also occasionally served as a Latinized form of Beth, a short form of Elizabeth.
